Guillermo del Toro, Eugenio Derbez and other artists who will represent Mexico at the 2022 Oscars

This Sunday, March 27, the 94th annual Oscar Awards will be held. After the gala changed venue in 2021 due to sanitary measures due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this year it will return to the Dolby Theatre located in Los Angeles, California, United States and among the nominees, Mexican representation stands out with major projects in different categories.

In recent years, Guillermo del Toro has managed to position himself as one of the Mexicans with the greatest international presence thanks to his incredible films that have been characterized by their gloomy atmospheres. Each film has not only earned it recognition from the public, but it has also distinguished itself in different awards, including those awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

On this occasion, the tapatio is competing with The Alley of Lost Souls (Nightmare Alley) for “Best Film”, “Best Photography”, “Best Costumes” and “Best Production Design”. Unfortunately, he was not considered among the directors who could receive an Oscar for performance as a director. However, the film falls into two of the main categories.

In “Best Picture” he will compete against Belfast, CODA, Don't Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard (King Richard: A Winning Family), Licorice Pizza, The Power of the Dog and West Side Story.

In “Best Cinematography” he is nominated with Dune, The Power of the Dog, The Tragegy of Macbeth and West Side Story. So far, Guillermo del Toro has two Oscars for The Shape of Water and was nominated in 2006 for The Labyrinth of the Faun.

Another Mexican who will attend the awards gala is Eugenio Derbez, the renowned actor who has won over Latin American audiences with his comedies and is currently working on projects outside of humor. Such was the case of CODA, a film directed by Sian Heder that starred the creator of XHDBZ alongside Emilia Jones, Marlee Matlin and Troy Kotsur.

The inspiring story is considered “Best Film”, along with Guillermo del Toro's film, “Best Adapted Screenplay” and “Best Supporting Actor”. Although the name of the Mexican did not appear as such in the nominations, it is expected that he will achieve congratulations with his fellow cast members.

In an interview with Venga la Alegría, the 60-year-old interpreter commented that he is very excited to be part of the 94th Oscars and said that after receiving the invitation he went through a whole process to find the right outfit, in addition to the surprise that he was able to eat during the ceremony.

“Another thing I didn't know about the Oscars is that, in case you get hungry and so you're not standing up, they put food under your seat,” he said with a laugh.

Among the cast that was part of CODA, the name of another Mexican, Paula Huidobro, who took the photograph, also stands out.

Carlo López Estrada is another artist who will seek to put the name of Mexico high, as well as that of his family, since he is the son of the television producer, Carla Estrada, and grandson of the distinguished actress, Maty Huitrón. The young director could make history by winning an Oscar in his first nomination for Raya and the Last Dragon.

The film will compete for the golden statuette for “Best Animated Film” with Encanto , Flee, Luca and The Mitchells vs. The Machines., the latter being where the work of another Mexican also appears. This is Fausto Estrada Guerrero, who collaborated as a visual effects director. It is worth mentioning that the story based on Colombian culture is positioned as the favorite.
