Club Tigres is the first Mexican football team to have a “zero waste” stadium. This in order to generate green energy that will produce cement from the waste generated every time the feline group plays as a local.
In this way, the Estadio Universitario, better known as “El Volcán”, will collaborate with Cemex's Monterrey plant to ensure that the non-recyclable waste generated at Tigres headquarters is used as alternative fuel.
The Pro Ambiente company will be responsible for the collection, transfer and energy recycling of waste produced during the men's and women's league matches (such as disposable cups, food packaging, napkins, wraps and other materials).
First, the waste will be collected and separated into special containers so that it is not transferred to a landfill, “while for the rest of the waste there is already a recycling program”, a statement shared by the group led by Miguel Herrera reads.
This measure was implemented in the Tigres vs America match last Saturday, April 23 and will continue to be applied in the upcoming meetings of the Grita Mexico Clausura 2022. It is expected that each match will generate about 30 cubic meters of waste that will be processed at the Cemex plant in Monterrey.
According to the statement, the processing of green fuel for cement generation “is equivalent to almost 400 cars stopping a whole day”, as well as the planting of 82 trees. For his part, Club Tigres President Mauricio Culebro commented that these initiatives reinforce social and environmental commitment through sustainable projects that help promote alternative energies in the country.
The action was celebrated and acknowledged by the Executive President of Liga MX, Mikel Arriola, who pointed out that with these actions what is done is “to raise awareness about the care of the planet and promote the improvement of the environment”, while contributing to the city and the state of Nuevo León by taking advantage of the waste generated.
It should be noted that the University Stadium has a capacity for approximately 42 thousand fans and was built in 1967. It is located on the campus of the Autonomous University of Nuevo León (UANL), in the municipality of San Nicolás de los Garza.
This sports venue has been the protagonist of one of the most representative phenomena of football: “La Ola”. And it is that on September 18, 1984, a friendly match was played between Mexico and Argentina (which ended with a 1-1 draw), during which this famous “wave” was held, which ended up becoming popular in the rest of Mexican football.
Similarly, “El Volcán” has the largest screen in Latin America, measuring 12.48 meters wide by 8.60 meters high, as well as 25 closed-circuit cameras that record what is happening both on and off the court. It also has 220 boxes, 480 VIP seats, 10 luxury suites, a box for more than 120 journalists and capacity for 3,600 vehicles.
This venue has hosted the FIFA World Cup Mexico 86 and the 2011 FIFA U-17 World Cup Mexico. Among the sports figures that have played in this stadium are Pelé, Maradona and Ronaldinho.
