Last Friday, April 22, when Earth Day was celebrated, the Mayor's Office of Medellín announced that it has already put into operation a 100% electric fleet for Metroplús Bus Line 2, which crosses the Urban Area of Protected Air - ZUAP del Centro.
The objectives referred to by the official are: affordable and clean energy, sustainable cities and communities, responsible production and consumption, climate action and life of terrestrial ecosystems.
According to the municipal administration, electric buses will have an impact in different areas; to the south on 44th Street (San Juan), to the north on 58th Street (Echeverri), to the west on Carrera 57 (Avenida Ferrocarril) and to the east on Carrera 43 (Girardot).
The launch of this fleet seeks to reduce the concentrations of pollutants in the atmosphere by reducing emissions from transport in order to improve air quality and people's health, according to the Mayor's Office of Medellín.
“In the Commemoration of Earth Day, we are celebrating ten years since we have launched the operation of Metroplús Line 2, a great contribution to the Ecocity and with the integration of the five eco stations on Oriental Avenue located in the industrial area of the Protected Air Urban Zone, a great contribution is made to the city with a smart and clean mobility. We are pleased that today the Mayor's Office of Medellín will integrate five new electric buses into this line, so that the fleet consisting of 25 buses is completely electric,” said Jaime Garzón Araque, manager of Metroplús.
Metroplús Bus Line 2 is made up of 25 buses that run through five central stops and three stops (Palos Verdes via B, Barrio Colombia and Prado), which run from the University of Medellín to the Parque Aranjuez stop. This line benefits an average of 137,000 passengers a day.
“This transition to electric mobility generates benefits for transport users and for the city. Electric buses significantly reduce air emissions and noise during operation. With these vehicles, we have great improvements in reliability and fleet availability and we significantly simplify maintenance activities and their costs,” said the head of the Medellín Metro Bus Area, Pedro Buitrago Bustamante.
It should be remembered that the city has 65 electric buses distributed on Line 1 and 2 of Metroplús and Line O of buses. These are loaded at the Transport Logistics Center with headquarters in Fatima and the University of Medellín, through ten shippers.
