On Saturday morning, the Apostolic Nunciature announced that Pope Francis appointed Monsignor Nelson Jair Cardona Ramírez, who until now was bishop of the Diocese of San José de Guaviare, as apostolic administrator of the “vacant seat” in Villavicencio.
The election was made by decree issued by the Congregation for Bishops, which states that an apostolic administrator of the Church is appointed, until the “vacancy of the canonical bishop can be elected”.
His appointment came after Pope Francis accepted the resignation from the pastoral government of Archbishop Oscar Urbina Ortega, as residential archbishop of this Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction.
The reasons for the resignation of Archbishop Urbina, as indicated, are due to the fact that he reached the maximum age in office (75 years). The now retired from the Archdiocese of Villavicencio had to face a pedophilia scandal recently following the investigation of journalist Juan Pablo Barrientos, pointing him to be one of the 38 priests of Meta and Guaviare, implicated in the sexual abuse of an infant.
