Tourism spending during the recent Carnival and Easter holidays in Ecuador reached USD 127 million, reported the Andean country's tourism ministry.
According to a recent statement, tourism spending this year exceeded the figures obtained before the pandemic. For example, during the Easter festivities it reached USD 50 million, which is 15% more than what was achieved in 2019.
These resources and visitors visited the provinces of Pichincha, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas and Azuay, four of the most populated in the country, except for Santa Elena, which is a newly created province. This was explained in detail in an analysis of destinations and expenditures by the Ministry of Tourism.
The report reflects the following figures: Pichincha reports a tourism expenditure of USD 7,383,000 on 139,211 trips; Manabi had USD 5,384,000 in 122,973 trips; Santa Elena had USD 4,708,000 in 108,369 trips; Guayas had USD 4,255,000 and 72,668 trips; and, Azuay had USD 4,388,000 in 67,176 trips. As a result of the combination of Carnival and Easter holidays, tourism spending totaled USD 127 million, the study adds.
During the carnival festivities Santa Elena was the favorite province for tourists, although Pichincha led the lists of tourist spending. During the four-day carnival holiday, tourist spending exceeded 77 million dollars.
Similarly, the average individual expenditure is valued at USD 66 per day and per tourist, which expresses an increase of 6% compared to the same holiday in 2019. Also according to data from the emergency service ECU 911, there were about 1.5 million trips, exceeding the projections calculated for the occasion.
In addition, as a result of the release of permits for capacity in the premises, the reduction of the Value Added Tax (VAT) from 12% to 8% during holidays and free transit in public spaces, the country's main tourist destinations increased the visit of travelers. This is shown by the number of trips during the Easter holiday in 2022 which increased by 18% compared to the same holiday in 2019.
As for accommodation, the figures for the Easter holiday in 2022 are close to the figures before the pandemic because this time it reached 96% occupancy compared to 2019.
According to the Tourism Services Cadastre of the Ministry of Tourism, 88% of registered tourism companies are micro-level, 12% are small, 0.5% are medium-sized and 0.05% are large. Following these figures, it is estimated that approximately 160 thousand beds out of 165 thousand available were occupied during these holidays.
Tourism Minister Niels Olsen thanked and praised the community's support and work. It also welcomed the implementation of the biosafety program, as well as the contribution of the tourism services sector that has been involved in the planning and investment of improvements to its facilities, including all care systems.
The statement states that this is a good way to evaluate the effective management of infectious diseases, the progress of the immunization plan, the release of capacity permits in public spaces, the reduction of VAT and other measures implemented by the Government of Ecuador to improve the economy, reactivate enterprises and to resume the services of this sector of the economy.
