“Do you believe in magic?” , the mysterious magician Lee Eul asks Yoon Ah-yi in the trailer with which Netflix anticipated the May 6 premiere of The Sound of Magic, the new K-drama that, according to what has been seen so far, has the potential to captivate audiences like the recent Korean hits Job Proposal ( Business Proposal), We're Dead (All of Us Are Dead) and Juvenile Justice.
Ah-yi is a teenager whose life has only shown its hard aspects. When they took her father, because of the debts, her mother abandoned her and her younger sister. Her childhood ended then, abruptly; forced to grow up suddenly, she forgot her dreams as a girl who wanted to become a magician.
With a part-time job, he manages for both of them to barely survive — if either of them needs a pair of new socks, it's a crisis in his budget — and, above all, he strives to excel in school. All Ah-yi wants is to really grow up, finish his studies and come of age to have a better job.
Her classmate, Na Il-Deung, competes with her to see which one gets the best marks, but she also values and appreciates her. For him, being successful in school is more than a goal: it is a strong pressure that guides his actions. Both begin to have feelings for each other when one night, while trying to catch a 50,000 won bill that blows the wind, she arrives at an abandoned amusement park.
There lives the magician, a figure with a cape who catches the banknote and asks if she believes in magic. The encounter, although eventful at first, will change Ah-yi's life.
The production of JTBC Studios (the same company that made All of Us Are Dead) is based on the webtoon Annarasumanara, which Ha Il-Kwon published in 2010-2011 on Naver. Choi Sung-eun (Beyond Evil, Start-Up) plays Ah-yi, Ji Chang-wook (Lovestruck in the City, Suspicious Partner) magician Lee Eul, and Hwang In-yeop (True Beauty, Freshman) Il-deung, all under the direction of Kim Sung-youn (Itaewon Class).
The Sound of Magic will have six episodes and will hit Netflix on May 6 in 190 countries.
