Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), president of the Mexican Republic, reported on the arrest of one of the most wanted drug traffickers in all of Colombia and a priority target of the US authorities. This is Edward Fernando Giraldo, alias the “Boliqueso”, also considered one of the “last pure traffickers in Colombia”.

At the morning conference, the president announced that it was the Secretary of the Navy (SEMAR), who was in charge of the capture operation in Mexico City (CDMX), which was carried out in cooperation with the US Drug Control Administration (DEA), the Government of Colombia and other agencies international. The drug trafficker, he said, is already in the process of extradition.

Last Wednesday, April 20, the Secretary of Citizen Security of Mexico City (SSC CDMX) arrested Edward Giraldo, alias the “Boliqueso”, on Avenida División del Norte, in the El Rosario neighborhood, in the Coyoacán mayor's office.

A statement issued by the capital's authority mentions that the capture was made possible thanks to the implementation of fixed and mobile surveillance by the Ministry of Security, after receiving information that a foreign person was in Mexican territory possibly linked to a Colombian criminal group.

Thus, security elements, together with personnel from the National Institute of Migration (INM), arrested a 35-year-old man, a Colombian citizen who, it was later confirmed, was Edward Giraldo. He was transferred to Mexico City International Airport (AICM), to clarify his legal status and for the purpose of extradition to his country.

After the capture of Boliqueso, the United States announced that it will order the confiscation of any property of the criminal that it would have used to commit or facilitate the commission of his crimes.

The constitutional president of Colombia, Iván Duque, communicated what happened through a message sent to his Twitter account and thanked international bodies for their cooperation in the capture of the offender, considered a high-value target for the DEA and the European Union Agency for Police Cooperation (EUROPOL).

The Colombian president stressed that Edward Fernando Galindo Cardoza is one of the last “pure” drug traffickers to inherit the businesses of the extinct North del Valle Cartel.

US authorities have reported that they will prosecute him for international conspiracy to distribute cocaine, as expressed in a document of the New York Court, leaked after the announcement of his capture, and which dates back to 2015, detailing the sum of charges against the drug trafficker revealed by the United States Department of Justice.

According to the document, between May 2011 and December 2014, “Boliqueso” and his accomplices had distributed cocaine throughout the continent and eventually tried to enter it into the United States.

In the last 15 years, in addition to the delivery of drugs, he has been credited with the murder of several people, including Maria del Socorro Patiño de Moreno, 81 years old, on June 5, 2015, in the Uribe de Yumbo neighborhood (Valle del Cauca). Likewise, the murder of INPEC official, Julián Bernardo Tacuma Cortés, reported missing since June 6, 2015.
