The start of the Formula 1 season is not going as Max Verstappen nor did his work team expect. The Dutchman, defending champion of the title in this new edition, returned to zero for the second time in his first three appearances after leaving on lap 41 of the Australian GP due to a failure in his car. Red Bull was full of doubts about the origin of the damage in the vehicle and Helmut Marko appeared to give some clarity to the situation.
“Everything is fine with the engine, there is no problem. The problem was not in the power unit, but in the fuel supply. The fuel line blew up under high pressure. Honda has told us that we can count on the problem to be solved before the next race,” he clarified to the Austrian channel ORF.
“It was probably because of the rebound (porpoising). The case was simulated on the test bench, but the strange forces that porpoising produces are not easy to reproduce,” explained the team's adviser. He added: “We have it well controlled, but there are still small movements. We assume that this was the main cause of the damage to the fuel line.”
The situation is disconcerting and it begins to worry the main injured person: Max Verstappen. Marko revealed that they managed to calm the Dutchman down after the abandonment at the Australian Grand Prix but he is more than clear that the problem must be solved before it becomes an impossible snowball to stop. “After he failed he returned to the box and we talked about everything calmly. But if we don't start winning soon, then it is a time bomb,” Helmut concluded with an air of concern.
It is worth remembering that in addition to the episode he starred in the opening race in Bahrain, where he could not cross the finish line due to engine problems, what happened in Australia is another sign that puts Red Bull on alert, a team that recently signed a contract renewal with Verstappen until 2028. Classified as “quite frustrating and unacceptable” in the words of Max what happened on the last date, the trip to the Italian circuit will be a key chapter for the future of the current champion.
The next stop of the season will be Autódromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari for the Emilia-Romagna GP this Sunday, April 24. Red Bull's goal will be to finish the race without technical problems in their cars and try to stand up to Ferrari and Mercedes to score points in the table.
