The Interamerican Institute for Democracy (IID) and the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom are organizing the “Right and Left in the 21st Century” forum, which will take place next Tuesday, April 26 between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. in the MARC building of Florida International University (FIU).
The organizers indicate that the forum seeks to discuss and collect proposals on the current nature of the concepts of “left and right”, which deserve various and different meanings in society, politics, and public and press opinion in different latitudes such as Europe, the United States and Latin America. “Are there left and right? What are they? Is it possible to standardize the concepts? Why do these terms today represent different concepts in different places? These and other questions will be answered by academics, journalists, politicians, and former leaders of great prestige and experience who make up the four panels of the forum,” said an official statement about the event.
“It is clear that our region and the world today are experiencing the combined attacks of goal-truth, polarization and the rise of undemocratic regimes or dictatorships that are eroding democratic governance while fostering chaos in markets. There is a need to develop appropriate analytical tools to effectively address these challenges. The Forum aims to start the process of developing these analytical tools,” explained a press release released by the IID and the FIU Adam Smith Center for the Study of Economic Freedom.
Guests at the forum include politicians, statesmen, academics from Columbia University, Georgetown and FIU, and an award-winning group of journalists from CNN and Fox News, among others. Alvaro Uribe, former president of Colombia; Luis Almagro, OAS Secretary General; Patricia Bullrich, former Minister of Security of Argentina; and Beatrice Rangel, member of the United States Council on Foreign Relations, among many others, will participate as speakers.
The Interamerican Institute for Democracy is described as a center of pluralistic, non-proselytizing thought made up of volunteers from around the world that studies, researches and disseminates political and economic successes that reinforce democracy and foster freedom in the region.
And the Adam Smith Center for Economic Freedom states that it has been established at Florida International University with the mission of serving as a world-class, independent, non-partisan think tank that aims to inform, influence and inspire current and future leaders to develop and implement policies. innovative, meaningful, and effective public to promote individual freedom and prosperity.
