Colombia recorded a single death from COVID-19, something that has not happened for more than two years

The Ministry of Health announced in its most recent report that there are still more than 3,000 active cases throughout the country.

Although the risks of coronavirus infection continue to be one of the concerns of health authorities around the world, the figures in Colombia have fallen quite noticeably in recent weeks, something that was evidenced in the latest report by the Ministry of Health where it was confirmed that only one person had died due to COVID-19. This didn't happen about two years ago.

The latest report by the Ministry of Health confirmed 248 new cases, 176 recovered and only one death. In total, there are 3,060 active cases in Colombia and since the pandemic began, 6,090,246 infections have been confirmed, 5,923,619 people recovered and 139,755 lost their lives due to the virus. 34,306,661 samples have been processed in the country.

According to information provided by the Ministry of Health, the person who lost his life to COVID-19 was a 73-year-old man in the municipality of Cartago, Valle del Cauca. The individual in question had comorbidities of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

For more than two years, Colombia has not recorded a single death from COVID-19 in a day, since the last time this happened was on April 1, 2020. At that time, the Ministry of Health confirmed 159 new cases, the country reached a total of 1,066 patients positive for the virus and a total of 17 deaths had been recorded. 39 people had recovered from the virus.

Recall that on March 6, 2020, the Ministry of Health confirmed its first infection with COVID-19. A 19-year-old citizen from Milan, Italy, one of the hardest hit countries at the start of the pandemic. The woman had symptoms and went to the health services where they performed the respective analysis of samples and they tested positive for COVID-19.

15 days later, the authorities and the National Government confirmed the first death from COVID-19 in Colombia. A 58-year-old man who worked as a taxi driver in the city of Cartagena and who day before transported Italian tourists in his vehicle, two days later he began to show symptoms until March 21 he lost his life. This person had untreated comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes.

The arrival of vaccines and the National Vaccination Plan allowed people to gradually return to some of the normality prior to the pandemic. On February 17, 2021, Colombia applied its first vaccine against COVID-19. The person chosen was the sick head of the Sincelejo University Hospital, Verónica Machado, who said at that time she was proud to have been chosen.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Colombia has experienced four waves of mass contagion, the first occurred in mid-August 2020, the second was for January 2021, the third was recorded in June of the same year and the last one was in January 2022 with the arrival of the omicron variant. In the latter, more than 30,000 cases were reported daily in the country.
