The Mexican Navy reported on Wednesday that it had seized 1,700 kilograms of cocaine that were transported on a ship with four crew members aboard the port of Manzanillo, in the western Mexican state of Colima.
Mexican authorities have described the seizure of drugs as a definite blow to the financial structure of organized crime. On the ship, officials and sailors found 35 sacks containing the drugs stored in 1,4000 packages in the form of bricks. “It should be noted that this operation, which was carried out under the trinomial operational concept (ship-helicopter-interceptor), as well as the use of state-of-the-art technologies, prevented the alleged drug from reaching the illicit market.”
The drugs have been handed over to the Prosecutor's Office for judicial proceedings, although it has not been informed which criminal group the cargo belonged to.
The port city of Manzanillo is an important commercial bridge with Asian markets, which traffic synthetic drugs. In this port, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador announced two years ago his strategy to combat drug trafficking, passing control of ports to the military.
