The photographer and the postman: the crime of Cabezas will be Netflix's new big bet. Through an exhaustive investigation that includes archival material and various testimonies of the case, the production of Haddock Films reconstructs the crime of photojournalist José Luis Cabezas, which occurred in 1997, and deals in detail with an unsuspected mafia network.
“The crime of photographer José Luis Cabezas, in the summer of 1997, shocks Argentina and ends up revealing a mafia network in which the political and economic powers do not seem to be alien. The consequences will be almost as dramatic as the crime itself, both for its instigator and for the entire country,” says the synopsis shared by the streaming platform.
This title was directed by Alejandro Hartmann and with Vanessa Ragone in the production, both of whom had previously worked together on Carmel: Who killed Maria Marta? , a docuseries about the murder of Maria Marta García Belsunce that was also released on Netflix. The screenplay was written by Tatiana Mereñuk, Gabriel Bobillo and Alejandro Hartmann.
The sources that were consulted through interviews are Gabriel Michi, Mariano Cazeaux, Alejandro Vecchi, Eduardo Duhalde, Oscar Andreani, Raul Aragon, Osvaldo Baratucci, Cora Gamarnik, Miguel Gaya, Dr. Jorge Gomez Pombo, Gustavo González, Manuel Lazo, Eduardo Longoni, Lorena Maciel, Julio Menajovsky, Ricardo Ragendorfer, Hugo Ropero and Edgardo Zunino.
The documentary production will also be screened at the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival. Ahead of its worldwide release, The Photographer and the Postman: The Crime of Cabezas will be released first in Argentina on April 21 during the 23rd edition of the Buenos Aires International Independent Film Festival (BAFICI), and will be screened again at this event on Friday 22nd and Sunday 24th.
The murder shocked Argentina and the image of José Luis Cabezas became a symbol of the press's struggle for freedom of expression. The tragic event also had a strong impact on the Argentine government of that time led by President Carlos Menem.
The Photographer and the Postman: The Crime of Cabezas premieres on May 19 on Netflix and on April 21 at BAFICI.
