The Nicolás Maduro regime ordered the arrest of a woman who recorded a humorous video about the Chavista leaders on the TikTok social network.
Olga Lucila Mata de Gil and her son, Florencio Gil Mata, were charged with the crime of “promoting or instigating hatred” for filming.
In the video, the woman appears making arepas for sale while a voice asks her “what do you have?” , to which she responds by alluding to Tarek William Saab, Hugo Chavez, Diosdado Cabello, Iris Varela, Cilia Flores and Nicolás Maduro.
The prosecutor general of the regime, Tarek William Saab, announced through his Twitter account that the 4th Special Court of Control with jurisdiction in cases related to terrorism ordered the capture of both of them through the humorous video.
The couple will be prosecuted for the alleged commission of the crime promotion or incitement to hatred because the two “instigated the murder of public figures”, as written by Saab.
The arrest of Florencio Gil has already been executed by agents attached to the CICPC Computer Crime Division, Venezuelan media reported.
The NGO Espacio Público, which especially promotes and defends the right to freedom of expression, recalled that “the right to record and disseminate a video exercising the full enjoyment of freedom of expression in its individual and social dimension, through humor, is not a reason for detention nor is it a crime”.
Onslaught against freedom of expression
This is not the first time that the Chavista regime has criminalized freedom of expression.
A year ago, as Efecto Cocuyo recalls, journalist Milagros Mata Gil and writer Juan Manuel Muñoz were arrested after the publication of a writing entitled “Festa Mortal”, which revealed a celebration of more than 800 guests in Puerto La Cruz in which prosecutor Tarek William Saab and his family participated.
The party was celebrated as the country was going through the second wave of COVID-19 and when all public events were banned. As confirmed by the digital portal Tal Cual, at least three deaths could have been related to that celebration.
In 2020 and in 2021 (until March), the NGO Espacio Público recorded a total of 37 arrests for online publications (33 in 2020 and 4 in 2021), through various platforms, networks and applications. Of the 37 arrests, 48% (18) were for posts through the instant messaging application Whatsapp.
