The controversy continues. A few days ago, the marriage that the daughter of Alfredo Barnechea, Belén, with the Spanish aristocrat Martín Cabello de los Cobos. What caught the attention of the images was the 'viceregal' theme of this event that took place in Trujillo.
In this regard, harsh criticism arose on social media against the daughter of the former presidential candidate. Many of them were outraged to see what appeared to be a representation of indigenous women on the ground, as a sign of reverence, and ended up denouncing this as an act of discrimination and racism.
Susana Baca, former Minister of Culture and 3 times Latin Grammy Award winner, also joined questions and on his Facebook account he categorically rejected this celebration, which has caused great indignation.
However, her position did not last long, as today, Saturday 16 April, she again shared a message rectifying her words, noting that Belén Barnechea's mother had communicated with her to explain in detail the purpose of this wedding.
“I don't have to judge, it's up to me, as a citizen, to express feelings and thoughts that have made my life a fight against racism and social inequalities, to say the least (...) My dear Claudia Ganoza, Belén's mother, and other friends, have written to tell me that the choreographic purpose at Trujillo's wedding was to represent a ritual dance typical of the customs of the Moche culture. I don't doubt that truth and that feeling,” he said at first.
However, it was not the only thing that the artist mentioned, she also defended her point of view and pointed out that with the current situation, it is a total nonsense that she has made this representation that has generated great discomfort in Peruvian society.
“But Claudia has a mistake in her claim that there was no bad intention in this theatrical recreation of the dance of the ropes of the Moche culture. (...) she must recognize, at the same time, that a staging of this nature and in a context of the Spanish nobility and the current political path in the Peru, which is loaded with racial symbolisms, was a mistake rather than a party,” he added.
“Claudia dear, I don't have a bad feeling for you and your family and the common friends we have with a lot of love... I just react like a woman who saw and it was painful to see a (perhaps very bad) performance where defeated and humiliated men and Indian ladies kneeling and their heads down celebrating the passage of the Lord... in this context of our current policy is the least to say: a nonsense...”, he said.
Finally, Susana Baca congratulated the couple who have just married, wishing them happiness in this new stage. “Beyond this, I must wish a lot of happiness to this couple who are united with love,” he said.
