The Environment Secretariat, led by Carolina Urrutia, in the company of the Environmental and Ecological Police, is carrying out operations in different parts of the Colombian capital, mainly at the entrance to the city, such as transport terminals, El Dorado airport; market squares and around temples and churches; in order to avoid trafficking in wildlife.
Traditionally, during Easter, parishioners tend to buy and/or pluck the palms, both wax and wine, which are used for Palm Sunday, but removing these plants from their habitat generates a major imbalance in their populations and ecosystems; then, some people simply discard them what they do. means the total loss of these plants.
In addition, animals are also heavily affected by hunting, for marketing as pets or for the consumption of their meat, since some species, such as turtles and iguanas, are considered to have white meat, which poses a great threat to wildlife, occasionally at Easter.
Secretary Urrutia said:
This is why the authorities ask citizens to report any case of illegal sale, of any wild animal, for example: birds, reptiles, amphibians, among other species. “It's absolutely forbidden, always remember, we have to leave our wildlife free and at home. Bringing into the city wildlife: parrots, any birds offered to them, bears, reptiles, any wild animals belong to their natural space, is prohibited. And we ask them to please don't buy them, don't get them and don't bring them to the city,” added the official.

According to official figures, in 2021, 12,468 wild animals were recovered and seized in different parts of the city. The authorities added that 8,317 of these animals were alive, 184 dead and 3,967 also deceased, were destined for processing and/or manufacturing industrial or fashion. Also, about half a ton of products such as meat, eggs and so on were seized; destined for human consumption.
Another recommendation made by the Ministry of Environment is for drivers to use “sustainable driving” during their return home, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions, in addition, will save money on fuel and vehicle maintenance. Road accident rates can even be reduced.
According to the agency, these are the “eco-driving practices”: “Before braking, let the car slow down. This reduces throttle usage and fuel consumption. Avoid strong and unnecessary accelerations. Turn off the vehicle when it is going to be stopped for more than one minute. Maintain a constant speed. Do not accelerate when the started vehicle is stopped. Perform periodic maintenance of the vehicle. Check tire pressure.”
