Following his starring role in “Until we meet again”, Stephanie Cayo is back in the eyes of the world. “Amalgama”, directed by prominent Mexican filmmaker Carlos Cuarón, is the new Netflix film that features the Peruvian actress, as well as Tony Dalton, Miguel Rodarte and Manolo Cardona.
The film, recorded in the paradisiacal towns of Mexico and the Dominican Republic, has already been presented in several cities in the United States and at various film festivals. In our country and the rest of the world, “Amalgama” has been available on the streaming platform since April 13.
“Amalgam is an interesting experience. What we lived doing it was intense, long days of work. Everything was sequence shots and sometimes we did 35 shots per scene, which I had never done before. It ended up very drained after each day of filming. And on top of that we were in paradise, living a month in Tulum and another in the Dominican Republic. It was hard to be working in such beautiful places!” , said Stephanie Cayo, who plays endodontist Elena, in an interview for Cosas.
WHAT IS “AMALGAM” ABOUT?
Doctors Hugo (Rodarte) and Saúl (Dalton) are two great friends who meet at an annual dentists' congress, held in the Riviera Maya, in America. It is during their time that they meet Elena (Cayo), an endodontist of striking beauty, and Chemo (Cardona). Although none of them know, the four of them have a history of pain behind them.
In order to conquer women, Saul proposes a romantic “getaway” to an uninhabited paradise island, without imagining that the others would end up joining. This is how dentists spend together a crazy weekend of jealousy, envy and excess on a tiny island in the Caribbean, where everyone will bring out the best and worst in themselves.
Technological alienation, isolation, machismo, infidelity, intimate partner violence and individual frustrations are also part of the film, always mixed with a tone of black humor.
CASTING PROCESS
Carlos Cuarón, director of “Amalgama”, said that the casting process to choose the protagonists was one of the toughest tasks. And, in addition to the locations, the chemistry between the four characters had to stand out on screen, so it needed experienced actors who could improvise their lines when necessary.
“We built the dialogues as we thought they would work for history,” Cuarón explained in an interview for Cine Premiere México. “They are very colloquial dialogues of course. What happens is that I like to work with actors and give them freedom. Let's say that the theoretical framework they have is the indications that I give them,” he said.
“Within that they are free to create the character as they want [...]. I like working with imaginative and proactive actors. And these four are,” added the Mexican filmmaker.
THE FACT: Carlos Cuarón revealed that the idea of making this film came about during a trip to the Riviera Maya. Before “Amalgama”, the director had not directed for a span of 7 years. This is his return.
