Ecatapec Fire and Civil Protection Department personnel caught an African lion cub that was wandering along José Francisco Córdoba Street in the Las Américas subdivision.
The first reports from the staff of the Department of Environment and Ecology showed that the feline, aged between 6 and 10 months, showed obvious signs of malnutrition and muscular atrophy, so it was transferred to Ehécatl Park.
According to residents of the area, at dawn they noticed that an apparently disoriented lion was walking through the streets of the subdivision and immediately notified the authorities.
After assessing the poor condition of the feline, Environment and Ecology, he reported to the jurisdiction of the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA), to receive specialized care.
The mayor of Ecatepec, Fernando Vilchis Contreras, reported that the specimen will remain under the supervision of the veterinarians of the Ehécatl Park pending the intervention of the federal authorities for environmental protection.
In October 2021, personnel from the same municipality rescued a moreletti crocodile that was located inside a home in the San Agustín neighborhood, which is presumed to have escaped from a nearby house. On that occasion, the reptile was sheltered and transferred to the facilities of the Ehécatl Park.
Trafficking in animals, especially exotic species, continues to be a problem in Mexico, as it endangers the lives of the species, since in most cases, they are not in adequate sanitary conditions and the owners do not have the required permits.
In a similar case, on March 20 in Querétaro, the corpse of a white tiger (Panthera tigris) was located in Huimilpan following a report by personnel from the Municipal Animal Care Center of the Marqués.
Members of the Municipal Public Security of Huimilpan put before the staff of the Public Prosecutor's Office in Querétaro the remains of a male tiger, approximately 10 years old, 250 kilograms in weight, worn claws, general condition of good meat and skin with the presence of blood, so they looked like firearm impacts.
The Attorney General's Office verified whether the remains had any marking system, without observing any tattoos, so a universal microchip reader was used, detecting one on its right back.
The federal agency filed a criminal complaint with the Office of the Attorney General of the Republic in Querétaro in order to determine responsibilities and help identify the action or omission that led to the feline putting the civilian population and the environment at risk, as well as to request that the actions of those involved were adhered to some protocol as established by the Regulations of the General Wildlife Act.
