The Venezuelan NGO Foro Penal said Wednesday that there are 240 detainees in the country that it considers political prisoners, unchanged from its last report last week.
The NGO indicated that, of the total number of prisoners, 226 are men, 14 women and there is also one minor, of whom 110 are civilians and 130 are military.
“Since 2014, there have been 15,758 political arrests in Venezuela,” said the Penal Forum, which added that, today, more than 9,000 people are still subject, “arbitrarily”, to measures restricting their freedom.
The United States State Department on Tuesday denounced in its annual report on human rights that the Nicolás Maduro regime keeps “hundreds” of politically motivated prisoners in prison, many of them in “critical” conditions.
In the 2021 document, the US highlighted that the Venezuelan regime “allowed some opposition candidates to participate” in the November regional elections, but “there were no conditions for free and fair elections.”
He also stated that negotiations between the Executive and the opposition, which took place in Mexico between August and September, allowed the return to the country of some “figures of exile”.
“Despite these changes, the Maduro regime continued to hold hundreds of people in prison for political reasons and prevented hundreds of opposition candidates from exercising all their rights to run,” he criticized.
