On Sunday, April 10, the Colombian delegation arrived in Ecuador that will be participating from April 13 to 16 in Group I Americas of the Billie Jean King Cup, a series that brings together eight teams from the continent in search of the two places in the Play-offs that will be played during the month of November.
Team Colombia Colsanitas arrived in the city of Salinas, the venue of the confrontation, with its captain Fabiola Zuluaga and the four tennis players available for this round: Yuliana Lizarazo, María Fernanda Herazo, María Paulina Pérez and Antonia Samudio.
The matches, which will start next Wednesday and run until Saturday, will take place on the cement courts of the Salinas Golf and Tennis Club, a venue that some of the Colombian players already know because a W25 tournament was held there a few weeks ago.
Now, this Wednesday, in the debut, the national team lost 0-3 to the Argentina national team. The first point was lost by Yúliana Lizarazo: Solana Sierra won with partials of 6-2 and 6-3. In the second meeting, Maria Lourdes Carlé defeated Maria Fernando Herazo 3-6, 7-5 and 6-2. On the part of the doubles match, the victory was also for the Argentines. Yuliana Lizarazo and María Paulina Pérez lost to tennis players Jasmin Ortenzi and Julia Riera.
“I'm going quietly. Despite losing, I know that the players left everything on the field and that is the most important thing. Tomorrow we have a tough confrontation, but we are prepared to give it our all. Today's level was very high and it can help us to have confidence,” Zuluaga confessed.
On the other hand, Team Colombia Colsanitas will be in Group A along with Brazil, Argentina and Guatemala. For its part, Group B will be made up of Chile, Paraguay, Mexico and Ecuador. This Thursday, the national team will face off against its Guatemalan counterpart.
It should be noted that teams that finish third and fourth in Group A and Group B will have to play for not being relegated to Group II Americas.
Prior to Thursday's match, Fabiola Zuluaga confessed that: “I like the conditions because you can handle the ball a little more. Girls also like to play with these conditions. The wind may be what affects a little, but I think they have the ability to adapt. We are going the right way.”
