Fuerza Popular will not participate in the Lima mayoral elections, in the framework of the 2022 Regional and Municipal Elections, which will be held on Sunday, October 2 throughout Peru. This was confirmed by its leader, Keiko Fujimori, through her Twitter account.
In a thread, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori detailed the reasons for her decision. Among them, he said that, in the face of the crisis in the country, they will support a candidacy that manages to integrate those who believe that Lima “should not fall into the hands of populism or left”.
“Times as difficult as those in our country require joint efforts and concrete actions. But, beyond words, we must speak in the language of facts. Opposition forces must come together to defend our freedoms,” he tweeted.
“For this reason, Fuerza Popular declines to participate in Lima's mayoral elections. With no other condition than preserving our democracy, we will support a candidacy that succeeds in integrating those we believe that Lima should not fall into the hands of populism or the left,” he continued.
As is recalled, in January, Keiko Fujimori announced that Lima's pre-candidate for mayoral office by Popular Force was going to be the former congressman of the Alliance for Progress, and a member of other parties, César Combina.
“I welcome César Combina, who returns to Fuerza Popular with the challenge of contributing to building the necessary consensus with democratic forces and participating in these municipal and regional elections, as our country requires: more united than ever,” the former presidential candidate posted on that occasion.
At today's announcement, Combine backed the leader of her party. “As we said from the beginning: Peru above all else. The decision we have made is the right one: to continue to bet on unity,” he replied on social networks.

According to the latest Datum poll, if Lima's mayoral elections were tomorrow, Daniel Urresti, former presidential candidate, would be the next bourgomaster of the capital by leading the voting intention with 21%.
In second place is the leader of Popular Renewal and ultra-right, Rafael López Aliaga, with 19%, who also tried to be president of Peru in the last general elections. While, in third place, and further away, is the former mayor of La Victoria, George Forsyth with 10%.
Ricardo Belmont ranks fourth with 7%, followed by Alberto Tejada (4%). Álvaro Paz de La Barra has 3% and Eddie Cuellar has 2%. Who was going to be the representative of Fuerza Popular, César Combine, barely reaches 1%.
However, nothing has been said yet, since 22% said they would vote blank, flawed or for any candidate and another 10% still do not decide which candidate they would opt for. According to the fact sheet, this survey was conducted nationally in the target group of men and women aged 18 to 70 years and has a margin of error of 4.5%.
