During the day of the Revocation of Mandate, at least 78 people were killed in Mexico, according to the daily report of intentional homicides by the Ministry of Security and Protection Citizen (SSPC).
Jalisco (10), Puebla (8) and Guanajuato (7) were the entities that recorded the highest number of casualties. However, violent events were also recorded in Zacatecas (7), Baja California (4), Chiapas (2), Chihuahua (3), Mexico City (1), Coahuila (1) and Colima (1).
As well as in Durango (1), Guerrero (1), Morelos (1), Nuevo Leon (4), Oaxaca (3), Puebla (8), Quintana Roo (2), Sinaloa (2), Sonora (4), Tabasco (1) and Veracruz (3).
The intentional homicides in the six-year term of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador reached 117,307 victims, according to the report by TResearch International, whose projection at the end of the six-year period is 2213,163 registered cases.
The Mexican president has said in several that the problem of insecurity and violence cannot be confronted with coercive measures alone. “Violence cannot be confronted with violence. You can't face evil with evil,” he said verbatim.
Regarding the revocation of mandate consultation, the president celebrated his “success” on Monday in an unprecedented revocation consultation that mobilized 15 million supporters but did not reach the 40% needed to make it binding.
“It was a complete success. People acted very responsibly, millions of Mexicans. This is a historical event, it is something unprecedented in the history of our country. For the first time, citizens are being consulted to decide on the president's government,” the president said Monday at his daily conference from the National Palace.
With almost 100% counted, the National Electoral Institute (INE) recorded a citizen participation of 17.72% and 16.46 million votes.
Of these, just over 15.1 million (91.9%) voted for López Obrador to remain in office until 2024, compared to 1.06 million (6.46%) who voted in favor of the revocation and some 280,000 who cast invalid votes.
The opposition had called for not voting in this exercise. And, in addition, the 40 per cent of votes was not reached on the nominal list of voters needed to make it binding.
Questioned about this, the president said today that he will seek that, for future consultations, the percentage of participation for these to be binding is lower than the current one, between 20% and 30%.
