According to the Attorney General's Office, José Luis Hernández Grajales had been serving a conviction since 2016 for femicide, violent carnal access and simple kidnapping. At that time, he was tried for the murder of Sandra Paola Morales, in the village of El Jardín, La Selva district, in the municipality of Guacarí, in Valle del Cauca.
According to relatives, Sandra, who suffered from psychiatric problems, was found with a fracture of the septum, bruises on different parts of the body, stems and leaves in the oral region, and signs of sexual abuse.
But, Grajales was serving a 38-year prison sentence in San Isidro prison in Popayán, Cauca. According to the Office of the Prosecutor,
