Two Israeli soldiers were shot and wounded this Sunday as they tried to reach Joseph's tomb, which was being vandalized, and which is located near the West Bank city of Nablus, in Palestinian territory.
After being shot twice in the knee and hand, the two soldiers are in a moderate situation and have been taken to a local hospital for treatment, as reported by 'The Jerusalem Post'.
“The soldiers arrived at an unmanned checkpoint at one of the entrances to Shechem, passed through it and entered the city. After a short time, they arrived at another checkpoint with gunshot wounds, the circumstances of the incident are under investigation,” the Israeli Army explained in a statement to which 'Israel National News' had access.
On Sunday night, about 100 Palestinians would have broken into the site, mutinized and set it on fire, before Palestinian security forces scattered them and smashed the objects inside. Specifically, they would have broken the tombstone that marked the grave of the biblical figure of Joseph, as reported by 'The Times of Israel'.
This event has come amid increased tensions in Israel and the West Bank, after multiple alleged terrorist attacks have killed 13 Israelis in recent weeks.
On the other hand, Israel's Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said that his government is “granting total freedom of action to the army, the Shin Bet (internal intelligence service) and all security forces to defeat terror.”
It was in a public speech in Tel Aviv, following the bloody attack by a Palestinian: “There are no limits to this war,” he added.
“Israel is the most powerful country in the region. Our enemies know it (...) The armed forces and security agencies will use all the defensive and offensive capabilities necessary to stem this wave of terrorism in the bud,” Defense Minister Benny Gantz said.
Since March 22, Israel has suffered four attacks, two of them by Israeli Arabs linked to the jihadist organization Islamic State and two by Palestinians from the city of Jenin, in the northern West Bank, a region occupied by Israel.
Jenin is considered a stronghold of Palestinian armed groups.
