Attacks against the LGBTI+ population in Colombia have been a constant. In fact, recent months saw a series of hate crimes recorded in Medellin, where six men were killed just for being part of this community.
Bogotá is no stranger to this type of hate crime, because on April 10, a Twitter user denounced a serious act of homophobia in the north of the city. According to Mayra Corredor, last Saturday at 3 am she was meeting a group of friends waiting for a taxi and there was a gay couple nearby, also waiting for transport.
She reported that two men arrived who began to beat and insult the couple in front of everyone who was in the place.
Then, the group of four people started yelling at the aggressors so that they would no longer beat the couples, who also decided to attack them.
According to the young woman, they managed to take a gun from one of the aggressors thanks to the help of an orderly from where they were being assaulted, but one of the men managed to hit her with a stick in the face.
The victims took refuge in one of the buildings in the sector, but the men managed to break the door and entered to destroy private property and assault those residing there.
Corredor reported that although they tried to contact the National Police, the latter never arrived at the scene of the incident and attached a video of the aggressors.
Finally, the complainant reflected on the aggression against them and the same-sex couple, which could end in tragedy.
“What would have happened to them if we didn't get involved? They could have killed someone in an act of homophobia in the 21st century, in the middle of the street in Bogotá. And it is that I do not fit in my head the brutality that those two were charging against us”, he concluded.
