Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), president of the Mexican Republic, announced that if he did not have the majority of votes to approve the reforms to the Electric Law that he himself proposed to the Chamber of Deputies on September 30, 2021, he will send the proposal to modify the Mining Law in order to protect the country's lithium.
He said so at the morning conference on April 11, 2022, from the National Palace.
He argued that lithium is a mineral of utmost importance for Mexico's development as an independent nation. Therefore, “it should not be given to individuals, much less to foreigners,” instead, he said, it should be in the hands of Mexicans.
Likewise, he was confident about the results of the vote in this regard, thanks to the decision of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) issued on April 7, which endorsed the constitutional rule of the Electricity Law:
“For that specific reform, an absolute majority is not required, it is with a simple majority, half plus one and I am sure that will be achieved. Then we're going to protect ourselves like this. Because with the decision of the Court, to declare the Electricity Reform constitutional, it already helps, especially so that we can develop hydroelectric plants”
However, he mentioned that, of course, he was primarily in favour of constitutional reform.
