Last Wednesday, April 6, the opposition leader and presidential candidate for the Historical Pact, Gustavo Petro, appointed the Christian pastor and pre-candidate of that coalition Alfredo Saade as the one responsible for organizing evangelical leaders in order to support this left-wing political project, in view of the first presidential return in Colombia.
On that occasion, the senator from the left, who leads the polls of voting intention in the country, indicated that Saade will have the mission of dialogue with evangelical leaders and representatives of other churches, who represent one of the most striking sectors for political alliances, “around the idea of building the principle of freedom of religion and the strengthening of the family”.
“With Gustavo Petro we are going to insist on the need to safeguard the ecclesiastical institution. We're going to safeguard the family. I have been designated as the liaison between the different religious entities and the presidential campaign. More love, more faith, more country, less fear,” said Pastor Saade, who won the lowest vote within the left alliance.
Given this appointment, Pastor Saade called on Saturday representatives of the Christian church in Cali, capital of Valle del Cauca, on his way to capitalize on the votes that would make a difference in the first presidential round, which will take place on May 29, in the face of the political projects led by Federico Gutiérrez of the Team for Colombia; Sergio Fajardo, from the Centro Esperanza Coalition, and Rodolfo Hernández with his independent candidacy.
With these meetings, the Historical Pact seeks to add support from a sector that has shown marked discipline at the ballot box, and which, despite the low vote during the legislative elections of March 13, in which they reached only six seats in Congress, continues to represent one of the determining forces in winning the the electoral contest in the country that begins to be held with less than two months to go.
At this time Alfredo Saade, national liaison for religious and family affairs of the presidential candidate, Gustavo Petro, and his vice-presidential formula, Francia Márquez, formalize the 'Departmental Committee of Pastors and Christians with Petro' in the city of Cali. Love will rule Colombia. Get up Cali,” the evangelical leader shared on his Twitter account, in which he shared photos of the meeting.
Prior to this announcement, the opposition leader pointed out that Saade began his plan with “organizing pastors at the departmental level in order to inform our policy of freedom of religion and our policy towards strengthening the family.”
For her part, Colombia's vice-presidential candidate, activist and environmentalist Francia Márquez, announced that she had arrived in Barrancabermeja, Santander, on her tour of the country in which she announced that she had had conversations with the local community in Magdalena Medio where she reiterated her commitment to the environment and the refusal to extract oil through a hydraulic route known as fracking.
“We arrived in Barrancabermeja and talked to the community about their struggles for defense and environmental justice. It is our duty to protect the big house from fracking. Let's live tasty taking care of the and the territories. For a dignified life, Santander is and will be the power of life,” said the vice-presidential formula of the Historical Pact.
