Last Tuesday, the famous American magazine specializing in financial issues Forbes, released its 36th annual ranking of the richest people in the world, where it reported that there are 2,668 billionaires worldwide, that is, 87 fewer than a year ago, since in 2021 there were 2,755 billionaires.
This is for various reasons, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the war between Russia and Ukraine and slow markets. The list was led by businessman of South African naturalized American origin Elon Musk, owner of the Tesla and SpaceX companies, who for the first time appears in the top position in the ranking, with a fortune of $219 billion.
The second position was occupied by the American creator of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, who managed to accumulate a fortune of USD 171 billion.
In the case of Mexico, there were also some changes, as some of the millionaires managed to increase their fortunes, while others came out of the ranking. Carlos Slim continues to be the wealthiest person in Mexico and Latin America, increasing his wealth to USD 81.2 billion. Last year, his wealth was estimated at USD 55,930 million.
In second and third place, Germán Larrea Mota Velasco, who accumulated USD 30,800 million, and Ricardo Salinas Pliego, with USD 12.4 billion, respectively, were also held.
However, there were some of the Mexican billionaires who appeared in 2021, and this year they are no longer on the list. Such is the case of businessman Alberto Bailleres, who in 2021 was listed as the fourth wealthiest man in Mexico, with a fortune of USD 10.480 billion. The departure of the billionaire was due to his death, on February 2, 2022, at the age of 90.
Bailleres owned companies such as Palacio de Hierro, the Peñoles mining company, the GNP insurance company, among others. However, instead, his six sons entered the ranking, led by Alejandro Bailleres Gual, in the same position as his father, the fourth, with a fortune of USD 6.7 billion.
Another businessman who did not appear on the list for this 2022, but in the 2021 one they did see each other, was Juan Francisco Beckmann Vidal. In 2021, the leader of Becle SAB, the company that owns the tequila José Cuervo, appeared with a fortune of USD 7,180 million.
Instead of Beckmann Vidal, two of his sons appeared: Juan Domingo Beckann Legorreta and Karen Virginia Beckmann Legorreta. Juan Domingo, who inherited a nearly 51% stake in tequila firm Becle SAB from his father, appeared in sixth place, with a fortune of $4.1 billion; while his sister, Karen Virginia, who inherited an almost 36% stake in the same company, appears in ninth place, with a fortune of USD 2.8 billion.
The Arango family was another surname that was not seen this year in the ranking, but in 2021 it appeared in seventh place, with a fortune of USD 4.3 billion. The wealth of the Arango family was produced thanks to the sale of the self-service chain Bodega Aurrera to Walmart in 1991. The transaction cost the US company USD 5 billion.
The Servitje Montull family, owners of the Bimbo company, was another surname that was not seen this year in the Forbes ranking, and that in 2021 appeared in eighth place, with a fortune of USD 3.590 million.
Another surname that was not seen on the list this year, and that in 2021 appeared in tenth place, with a fortune of USD 3 billion, was that of the Robinson Bours family, owners of the food company Bachoco.
