
The official headquarters of Conmebol in Asunción opened its doors to hold the draw for the next Copa América Femenina that will take place between July 8 and 30 this year in Colombia. The most important continental national team tournament has great prestige behind it as it delivers three direct passes and two tickets to the repechage to participate in the next World Cup in New Zealand and Australia to be held in mid-2023.
The preliminary phase is made up of 10 teams that were drawn into two groups of five teams each. In Group A, Colombia will be the top seed as the host country, the teams that complete the group are: Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay and Bolivia.
Argentina fell into Group B that has Brazil at the top as they are the current champion team and will be accompanied by Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay.
Pending the publication of the official fixture and marking the South American classic on the calendar, the coffee group will be responsible for opening the event on July 8 against Paraguay as it is the organizing country of the event. It is worth remembering that it will be a one-way, round-robin format where the two best teams from each group will qualify for the second round. In addition, the best third in the first phase will be awarded one of the tickets to the repechage to qualify for the next World Cup.
“For the first time in the Conmebol Copa América Femenina we will award $1,500,000 to the team that manages to lift the beautiful trophy and 500,000 dollars to the team that wins the vice-championship,” announced the president of the institution, Alejandro Domínguez, highlighting the goal of continuing to develop women's football in South America. The venues of the event will be Cali (Pascual Guerrero Olympic Stadium), Bucaramanga (Alfonso López Stadium) and Armenia (Centenario Stadium).
In addition, the winning country will also win a pass to the women's football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. For their part, the runners-up will have to go through a playoff while from third to fifth they will have to try again at the next Pan American Games to be held in 2023. In the event that a team that already has a ticket to one of the two most important international competitions, it will be delegated to the next one in the standings of the tournament in question .
After its suspension in 2020, it is the first time that the Copa América Femenina has been separated four years between editions. Brazil is determined to maintain its continental dominance and add one more star to its showcase. La Verdeamarelha won the event seven times (1991, 1995, 1998, 2003, 2010, 2014 and 2018) while Argentina won it once in 2006.
