
Forbes magazine, specialized in finance, presented its ranking of Colombia's billionaires. According to him, some of the wealthiest families in the country continue to position themselves in different sectors such as the media as well as the beer industry and banking.
According to the report, “the six Colombian billionaires are worth a total of $28.3 billion. Their fortunes represent just under 10% of what moves the national economy in a year and almost 30% of the General Budget of the Nation approved for the term 2022″.
In this way, he specified that the Gilinski family “made the business move of the century in the country” and highlighted the banker Jaime Gilinski as “the protagonist in 2021″, since “he not only consolidated his emporium, consisting of banks, industry, hotels and media, but also became more than a third of the Sura and Nutresa Group, two of the largest multinas in Colombia”.
Data from the publication also revealed that Gilinski injected more than $9.2 trillion (US$2.45 billion) into the stock market in less than four months and today has a wealth valued at US$4.2 billion.

Another of those on the list is Luis Carlos Sarmiento, who remains the richest in the country with a fortune of US$9.9 billion. The publication thus pointed out that, “the financial conglomerate led by Sarmiento achieved the highest net income in its history with $3.3 billion and registering a growth of 40.4% compared to 2020″.
On the other hand, David Velez, aged 40, appears for the second time on the list with a wealth of up to US$6.5 billion. For the economic magazine, “Nubank's expansion in the world, as well as the IPO in the United States, were key factors that allowed it to continue to increase its assets”.
One woman is on the list, she is Julio Mario Santo Domingo's widow, Beatriz Davila of Santo Domingo, “who became the first Colombian woman to be considered a billionaire.” Thus, his sons Alejandro and Andrés are also part of the classification.
As Forbes explained, the Santo Domingos retain 1.2% of the world beer giant Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) and entered the non-conventional renewable energy business in 2021 through the family conglomerate, Valorem, with which “they inaugurated their first biomass-based plant, located in Puerto Carreño, Vichada, to on the banks of the Meta and Orinoco rivers, at the eastern end of Colombia”.
