The recovery of the Cundinamarcan rider, Egan Bernal, has not been easy at all, since there were more than 20 broken bones, in addition to other injuries he suffered during his accident at the beginning of the year, while training on a road in Gachancipá.
The Colombian champion of the Tour de France 2019 and the Giro de Italia 2021, was consciously referred to the Clínica de la Sabana where they managed to identify each and every one of the fractures that the athlete arrived with after colliding with an intermunicipal service bus.
Thanks to the professional level of the treating doctors, Egan came out of the surgeries quite well and showed a positive attitude towards the recovery process that was coming for him both physically and psychologically.
His team, Ineos Grenadiers, expected that their star rider would be ready at the beginning of the season to start competing in Europe, something that did not happen and that now, almost 3 months after what happened, remains an uncertainty, even, for doctors and the runner.
While he was preparing in the first months of the races to reach the 2022 Tour de France to face the current two-time champion of this race Tadej Pogacar of the UAE Team Emirates, in what would be one of the most anticipated duels by fans, Bernal has had to see himself walking with a stick and sometimes helped by his relatives.
Although unlike going on foot, on the bike he already moves and does not do it badly considering the complicated injuries he suffered and from which he still recovers little by little.
Even so, unexpectedly, Egan already does some training days where he seeks, beyond finding a high point in his physical conditions, to enjoy and exercise in a measured way and under medical recommendations.
As he stated in a press conference last Saturday, April 2, while he was doing a virtual shoot with his followers.
Egan has taken an important step in his recovery and although he has no date to return to competitions, he hopes to be calm and follow the recommendations of his team and the doctors who treat him so as not to damage the process that has led him to ride a bicycle in a short time.
On the other hand, in an interview that Dr. Carlos Santana gave to the Marca newspaper, it was revealed the economic approximate that Egan Bernal's recovery has come from since he was in the ICU on the first day of care.
He also added that in a country like the United States the amount would have been significantly higher: “Those injuries in the United States, for example, are worth more or less $800,000 because medicine is more expensive there in this type of situation.” In Colombian pesos, it would represent the figure of 3.2 billion.
