As a form of “protest” to the continuous auctions of pre-Hispanic pieces from Mexico in Europe, an “artist” went to the National Museum of Anthropology (MNA), in Mexico City, to kiss and lick part of the collection.
This is Pepx Romero, a Mexican theater producer who is considered one of the main contemporary references of Queer culture in Latin America, according to his Facebook page.
It was through the Instagram account “Obrasdeartecommentadas” that the video clip was published on Tuesday, where Romero is seen wearing a yellow jacket and dark glasses contemplating several pieces of the museum, and then kissing and/or licking them, while listening to a music track with a voiceover that explains the traffic in heritage goods in abroad, especially an auction in 2019, organized by Casa Drouot, in France, where 95 pieces were sold.
It is worth mentioning that “Commented Works of Art” predisposes in the same description of the publication that the material will make the viewer uncomfortable because it will witness “an apparent damage (we will have to discuss how much saliva affects the stone) to our heritage”, unlike the Drout auctions that have been held without indignation widespread use of social media users.
In addition, it is pointed out that although the MNA did not buy pieces at auction, there is a question of how it acquired them from their original places to make them the object of exhibition, such as the Tlaloc located at the entrance of the museum: “a reflection of the heritage system that has been generated by the Mexican State,” it reads.
Unsurprisingly, far from endorsing Pepx Romero's performance, many social media users reproached her actions; some even denounced it to the Ministry of Culture and the Mexico City Prosecutor's Office to investigate the case and apply an exemplary sanction to the theater director.
