In the last hours, Aeronáutica Civil confirmed that operations at La Nubia Airport in Manizales were suspended today, Friday, April 1, due to the presence of volcanic ash.
As reported by Aerocivil in a statement, the measure applies to both the departure and landing of aircraft, so they asked users to remain in contact with their airlines to determine changes in itineraries.
“Due to the presence of volcanic ash in the area of influence of La Nubia airport in Manizales, air operations to and from that terminal are suspended,” Aerocivil reported via Twitter.
The Colombian Geological Survey (SGC) confirmed that volcanic ash was present in various sectors of the city of Manizales and the municipality of Villa María, which is linked to gas and ash emissions from the Nevado del Ruiz volcano recorded during the first days of March.
It is worth remembering that after two months of relative calm, on the afternoon of March 1, the inhabitants of the capital of the department of Caldas were surprised by the fall of particulate matter in homes, streets and vehicles.
The phenomenon was also reported in the neighboring municipalities of Villamaría and Neira, so the Colombian Geological Survey, through the coordinator for Caldas, Gloria Patricia Cortés Jiménez, explained the phenomenon and clarified rumors about the volcano's activity, which had erupted on social networks.
“The wind from the Arenas crater of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano has been in a northwest direction, which is consistent with the direction in which Manizales is located, and sectors such as La Sultana, El Cable, the University of Caldas and even Cyprus,” said the official.
In addition, he explained that ash fall is due to the continuity of seismicity processes associated with the movement of fluids inside the volcanic structure, which leads to processes of emission of gases and ash into the atmosphere.
However, he stressed that “The Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to have a yellow activity level, that is, it shows changes in the behavior of its volcanic activity”.
“Through the cameras installed in the volcano area and the report of officials from the Los Nevados National Natural Park, the confirmation of gas and ash emissions associated with some of these signals was made,” the SGC initially indicated, and then added that the emissions would be related to “energy-level seismic signals. moderate, associated with the movement of fluids within the volcanic ducts”.
Currently, the state of the Nevado del Ruiz volcano continues to be yellow, so an acceleration of the volcanic process and, consequently, changes in its activity are not ruled out.
Ash emission from the Nevado del Ruiz volcano put three municipalities in Risaralda on alert
It is worth remembering that on March 24, the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory declared a yellow alert on the Nevado del Ruiz volcano due to the recent seismic activity, before which the Government of Risaralda warned that ash fall could be recorded in the municipalities of Santa Rosa, Pereira and Dosquebradas.
