“The captain has just informed us that we are in an emergency because there is a problem in the cockpit,” announced one of the attendants of the Latam flight LA4292 and all the passengers went into shock. The plane they were on, which took off on March 29 from José María Córdova Airport in Rionegro (Antioquia) bound for Cartagena, began to present problems, so it had to make an emergency landing at the same airport where it departed.
Before making landfall again, there were moments of terror in the air. Several videos show passengers screaming, praying and even ingesting liquor unhappily. Meanwhile, the crew was trying to control the contingency in order to land safely. In this process, the flight captain contacted the airport control tower serving Medellin to request that he be allowed to land in an emergency, to which the response was positive.
This was the conversation between both parties:
Control Tower: Services activated. It confirms the state of health of the passengers.
Pilot: All right, all of a sudden, some passengers are in shock, but we're all taking care of them on board.
Control Tower: Received, sir. I am awaiting any request.
Minutes later, at about 3:12pm, the plane descended at the airport where aeronautical firefighters, airport health and air authorities gathered to deal with the emergency and ensure the safety of the 147 passengers and 6 command and cabin crew on board.
It should be remembered that the emergency arose due to a failure of one of the front train tires after takeoff, so he had to return to the air terminal to make an emergency landing.
As the aircraft ran out of one of its tires and ended up landing on its train, the José María Córdova airport in Rionegro (Antioquia) remained closed until 4:18am this Wednesday, March 30, while air authorities towed the Latam aircraft to safety.
“That aircraft weighs more than 100 tons. Therefore, special equipment is needed to be removed and all that took us time to get it up. Now comes the whole part of inquiry, evidence gathering and so on, in order to be able to establish exactly what happened and to be able to pronounce ourselves as authority,” Fajardo said.
After the emergency, Latam Airlines also spoke out assuring that they are already working with the authorities to clarify the facts. Likewise, the airline informed all passengers whose flights to and from Medellin on March 29 and 30 were affected, that they will be able to change the date of their trip or request a refund of their money at no additional cost.
Those who wish to make changes or cancellations of their flights can complete the process through the page https://www.latamairlines.com/co/es, in the 'My Trips' section or in the Latam app.
