On Wednesday morning, a school route that was moving to a school located north of Cali suffered a traffic accident, which left eight injured. According to the Ministry of Mobility, six minors and two adults are among the injured.
The events, as announced by Cali's Undersecretary of Mobility, Edwing Candelo, occurred around 7:00 in the morning when school transport was mobilized on street 1D with Calle 72, in the Gaitán neighborhood, north of Cali.
The authorities' first hypotheses suggest that the accident occurred after the driver lost control of the vehicle, after falling into a hole covered with rain water and subsequently crashing into a tree, as was known to the newspaper El Tiempo.
According to the preliminary report of the authorities, known to RCN Radio, the injured are being treated at the Oxisalud medical center in the city. At the moment, the state of health of the eight people is unknown, however, it is expected that in the next few hours the entity will deliver a medical report.
The traffic accident in Cali is reported just a few days after a bus that served the school route in the municipality of San Andrés, in Santander, fell into an abyss leaving six children dead and 15 others injured.
According to the regional authorities, the events occurred in the sector known as Alto de San Pedro, on the afternoon of last Tuesday, March 22.
After three days of the accident, in dialogue with RCN Radio, the medical director of the International Hospital of Colombia (HIC), Frank Serrato Roa, revealed that, of the injured who were admitted to the institution, two girls remained in critical condition.
According to the doctor, the two minors, aged 7 and 10, remain hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) due to the severity of their injuries.
Next, the medical specialist added: “The second minor arrived at noon and we are currently evaluating this patient because she has a closed thoracoabdominal trauma and may require surgical interventions, her condition is critical and her prognosis is reserved.”
So far, although the authorities continue to investigate the causes of the accident, the Superintendency of Transport revealed that the preliminary inquiries would suggest that the accident would be directly related to irregularities in the school vehicle, including that the car did not have a valid operating card.
