Wilmer Cabrera (Cartagena, 1967), who scored the goal that qualified the Colombian team to the 1998 World Cup in France against Venezuela in which —for the moment— is the only coffee victory in patriot territory in 24 years, is in the rattle to lead America from Cali.
However, Cabrera clarified these rumors by confirming that the vallecaucano team hierarchy has not yet established contact with him to discuss this hypothetical scenario. In an interview with El Vbar, CARACOL's radio space, the defender and current coach of the MLS thanked the fans who consider his name to occupy the bench of Juan Carlos Osorio.
Cabrera wore the scarlet jacket between 1990 and 1997; with it he won two local tournaments, played a Libertadores final in 1996, and transferred to Argentine football (Independiente) to return to Millonarios, continue at Independiente Santa Fe and in the meantime found Boyacá Chicó with Eduardo Pimentel.
Retired from the competition, he joined the MLS as a coach since 2005. Faced with the scenario of returning to Colombia to lead one of his favorite teams, Cabrera stated that “If there is a serious project where you can work and where you want, which is the fundamental thing, it would be good. One as a coach cannot close the doors to anything, much less to his country of origin. To be able to contribute to Colombian football again, to progress and to deliver what you have learned would be a nice possibility.”
He stressed that he misses the pressure of the Colombian league, which led him to be champion several times and to leave a mark on the generation led by Francisco Maturana, with which he participated in two world cups, Italy-1990 and France-1998:
The rumor that places Wilmer Cabrera in the technical bank emerged strongly in recent weeks due to the negative results presented by Juan Carlos Osorio at the head of America in Cali. Asked about his approach to the club by Antena 2, the Cartagenero stated that he would like to be in Colombian football with a well-planned project: “There is nostalgia and the desire to collaborate, to return to Colombia one day, unfortunately for me I haven't been given the possibility, not because I have no interest, quite the contrary, it would be nice to return if there is a project.”
