Hippos living in Antioquia have been a problem that has been increasingly affecting communities in some municipalities. Recently, a video was released showing one of these animals wandering the streets of Doradal, in Puerto Triunfo, which caused fear among residents.
Added to this is another complicated situation, which is apparently due to the decision of a family in that area to adopt a hippo calf, which has caused concern given that this animal species is classified as dangerous for people as they are territorial.
In addition to that, there is talk of what is meant for the ecosystem by the fact that these animals are multiplying, branded as invaders and generating greater and greater damage.
Given this, the mayor of the municipality wanted to propose a sanctuary to protect the hippos, given that in the words of the president, mammals attract part of the tourism, but also for the safety of the inhabitants of Puerto Triunfo.
In a video released on social networks, it was revealed that a family had adopted a baby hippo, keeping it close to the children, which is taken as risky for them, the ecosystem and the neighbors of the sector.
The colony of hippos is believed to number more than 160 in Puerto Triunfo, making it increasingly difficult to control this population. On behalf of the Regional Autonomous Corporation of the Negro and Nare River Basins, Cornare, they have said that the sanctuary proposal is “far-fetched” because of the already known problems generated by animals.
Finally, the mayor insists that “they gain nothing by keeping these animals, they must be released, they should be with their mothers, the only thing that can happen is that they are captured by the police and they earn a 'canazo' (go to prison) for having these animals,” Guerra concluded.
Some animal groups hope that there is a way that the calf that was adopted by the family in Antioquia, can be transferred to the Hacienda Napoles park where, according to them, it would have better living conditions.
The numbers of hippos by 2030 seem to be unreassuring in the face of the rapid reproduction they are having, since by that year it is expected that there would be a population of 700 in the region, according to the authorities, which would be even more devastating for nature and for the safety of the inhabitants of the areas. adjacent to where the animals would be expanding. The inhabitants of Puerto Triunfo hope that there will soon be a solution with this invasive species.
