The US government announced on Thursday new sanctions against Russia, targeting 328 legislators of Parliament and 48 defense companies, as well as the director of Russia's largest financial institution.
“The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is appointing multiple companies that are part of Russia's defense industrial base and that produce weapons that have been used in Russia's assault on the people, infrastructure and territory of Ukraine,” said the Treasury statement, which assured that these measures will have” a profound and lasting effect on Russia's defense industrial base and its supply chain”.
As the text argued, members of the Russian Duma (Lower House) have supported the Kremlin's efforts to violate Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, including with statements recognizing the self-proclaimed independence of areas of eastern Ukraine controlled by pro-Russian militias, such as Donetsk and Luhansk.
