LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sebastián Yatra will sing at the Oscar Awards ceremony, the producers of the show announced on Tuesday night.
The Colombian singer will perform “Dos oruguitas” by Lin-Manuel Miranda, part of the soundtrack of the animated film “Encanto”. This is the first Spanish-language song to be nominated since “The Other Side of the River” from “Motorcycle Diaries” earned Uruguayan Jorge Drexler the Academy Award in 2005.
Beyoncé and Billie Eilish are among the candidates for best original song that will be presented at Sunday's gala.
Beyoncé will play the nominated “Be Alive” for “King Richard” (“King Richard: A Winning Family”), and Eilish and her brother and co-writer Finneas “No Time To Die” from James Bond's film of the same name.
Reba McEntire will sing “Somehow You Do”, composed by Diane Warren for the film “Four Good Days” (“4 days”).
Van Morrison, who wrote and sings the nominated song “Down to Joy” from “Belfast”, will not be able to attend the ceremony because he is on tour. The song will not be performed at the gala.
The Academy Award for Best Original Song goes to the composer, not the artist who performs it, and whoever wins this year will win their first Oscar.
That includes Beyoncé, winner of 28 Grammy Awards, who wrote “Be Alive” with Dixson.
Warren received his 13th nomination this year, but has not yet won the Oscar.
If “Two Caterpillars” wins, Miranda will join the exclusive club “EGOT”, as those who have won Emmys, Grammys, Oscars and Tony are known. The song was selected as the Oscar representative of “Encanto” before another from Disney's film, “We Don't Talk About Bruno”, also written by Miranda, became a hit.
The Oscars return to the Dolby Theater in Hollywood after the pandemic moved the show to Union Station for a smaller, more intimate ceremony last year.
