CLEARWATER, Florida, USA (AP) — Nick Castellanos signed a five-year, $100 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday.
The star fielder reached the agreement last week after the Phillies added slugger Kyle Schwarber.
This Wednesday the Phillies will present Castellanos at the preseason complex.
Last year with the Cincinnati Reds, Castellanos had a batting average of .309, with 34 home runs, 100 RBIs and PAHO .939. He was summoned to his first All-Star Game and awarded the Silver Bat.
His lifetime average is .278, with 168 home runs, 594 RBIs and an OPS of .814 in nine seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs and Reds.
Castellanos will join reigning National League MVP Bryce Harper as part of a Phillies lineup that also features star catcher J.T. Realmuto. He is expected to share time in the left forest and also as a designated hitter.
The Phillies ended last season 82-80, their first winning campaign since 2011, but extended their non-postseason streak to 10 years, the worst record in the National League.
Phillies president Dave Dombrowski was president and general manager of the Tigers in 2010, when they selected Castellanos, who debuted for Detroit in 2013.
In November Castellanos chose to terminate the remaining two years of his contract with Cincinnati. That remaining time in the agreement would have earned him $34 million.
Castellanos rejected a qualifying offer of 18.4 million from the Reds, so Cincinnati will receive a draft pick this year as compensation for Castellanos' departure from free agency.
