Last February, 10 acts of vandalism were documented in different universities in Venezuela, hit in recent years, mainly by budget asphyxiation and by the systematic theft of furniture and equipment, according to data released on Monday by the NGO Observatory of Universities (OBU).
“According to data from our OBU Monitor, during the month of February, a total of 10 acts of vandalism were recorded in different universities in the country,” the organization reported on its Twitter account.
The economic crisis in the nation has hit these centers of study in recent years, first with a budget suffocation and more recently with the systematic theft of furniture and the dispossession of their infrastructures.
Cecilia García Arocha, rector of the Central University of Venezuela (UCV) -located in Caracas and a World Heritage Site-, denounced that this study center “has been subject to poor budgets that have deteriorated” the facilities.
The deterioration of universities was reflected in the collapse of a section of the concrete roof of a 300-meter UCV corridor, in June 2020.
The study houses suspended night shifts to avoid further security incidents in the dark, when the risks are greatest.
