Singapore's city-state will open an embassy in Israel and an office in the occupied West Bank, officials from both countries said Monday following a visit by the head of Singaporean diplomacy to Jerusalem.

According to Israeli Foreign Minister Yair Lapid, his Singaporean counterpart Vivian Balakrishnan informed the Israeli authorities of Singapore's willingness to open this embassy, without specifying any date.

“I welcome the decision of the Singapore government to open an embassy in Israel for the first time since the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries in 1965,” Lapid said after a meeting in Jerusalem on Monday.

Singapore currently has a consulate in Tel-Aviv.

The day before, Balakrishnan visited Ramallah, the headquarters of the Palestinian Authority in the occupied West Bank. During the visit, he met with Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh and pledged to open a permanent Singapore office in the area.

Several countries have announced in recent years the opening of embassies in Israel, especially after the signing of standardization agreements between Israel and the Arab countries, since September 2020.

United Arab Emirates opened its embassy in Tel Aviv in July 2021. Bahrain and Morocco have also announced the opening of embassies in that city.
