
The airline Viva Colombia announced that it has started operations on its new Medellin-Punta Cana route (Dominican Republic), which will have four flights a week, as well as connections from Bogotá, Cali, Cartagena and Lima (Peru). The new air route was inaugurated on March 18 and expects that in the first year more than 50,000 passengers will be transported between the two cities using its new air service.
In the same way, the company announced that with the launch of the route, what it called the 'Live Effect', which brings with it a reduction of up to 30% in market fares, “allowing Colombians to find tickets from US$149 each way, starting from Medellín,” the company specified.
“We are very motivated by the inauguration of a route that promotes tourism and economic development throughout the region, such as Punta Cana. Added to this inaugural flight is the start of operations of our 14 domestic routes, which also begin operations this month and demonstrate Viva's local and international reach, as well as its purpose to ensure air inclusion and connectivity in the country and the continent. In this sense, our route network will continue to grow and will provide more opportunities to connect all travelers with Colombia and the world, through our 'hub' Medellin”, were the words of Felix Antelo, CEO of Grupo Viva.
Similarly, Flavia Santoro, President ProColombia, the entity responsible for promoting tourism, foreign investment in Colombia, non-mining energy exports and the country's image, said:
” We celebrate the entry into operation of this new route that will connect the Dominican Republic with Medellin. So far in 2022, we have received announcements of 19 new international routes, which is a reflection of the great moment that the reactivation of international tourism in our country is going through, thanks to the trust of airlines such as Viva”.

It should be said that today Viva Colombia has 44 domestic routes and 12 international routes. The new route between Medellín and Punta Cana will be available four flights a week distributed between Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday and will depart from the capital of Antioquia at 11:50 a.m. and from the Dominican capital at 4:11 p.m.
In other news about air movement in the country, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism confirmed that it approved seven new air routes, out of 10 planned for this year. According to the portfolio, the objective of creating these new routes is to improve the connectivity of the country's tourist areas, in addition to economic stimuli and promotion by the Government.
“Places with great tourist potential and high historical and ecological value such as Tolú and La Macarena, will finally have direct routes from Bogotá and Medellín, respectively. This generates a great benefit for tourism and the development of the regions,” explained the Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, María Ximena Lombana.
The routes chosen, as well as the respective airlines that will operate them are the following:
1. Avianca: Bucaramanga – Cali
2. Avianca: Cali – Riohacha
3. Satena: Bogota — Tolú
4. Satena: Medellin — La Macarena
5. Easyfly: Barranquilla – Valledupar
6. Easyfly: Pereira — Villavicencio
7. Viva: Cali — Monteria
