In India football is lived with an indescribable passion. Despite not having a striking league in which renowned figures star in the matches, and their national team has never participated in a World Cup, fans gather daily to follow the actions of the performers available to them.
Although many try to observe from a distance the genius that stars such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Kylian Mbappé or Erling Haaland improvise, at home the matches gather a large number of fans, regardless of the quality of their players.
However, austerity does not only occur at the sporting level. There is also a lack of control in the security agencies. And the results are regrettable.
In the last few hours at least 225 people were injured, six of them seriously, after the collapse of a stand during a match of one taking place in the south of the country. According to the local police, the incident took place in the town of Malappuram, Kerala state, late on Saturday, when an improvised rostrum gave way under the weight of fans, many of whom ended up with fractures of varying degrees.
As the chief of local police, Hidayathulla Mambra, explained, “several children were also injured”. It is that the stands could not withstand the weight of the large number of fans who filled the premises. As Mambra reported, the accident could have been caused by the number of spectators, who with their enthusiasm caused the rostrum to give way. In addition, recent rains in the region could also have weakened the structure. “There was enormous overcrowding. The stand could only hold a maximum of 3,500 people, but it is believed that almost 8,000 people came to watch the game,” said the official.
The Police have already filed a complaint against the organizers for jeopardizing public safety and estimates that they will soon make appropriate arrests of those responsible. Regional football tournaments in the northern district of Kerala are very popular, and therefore the match attracted thousands of spectators.
