After winning the Afro seat in the pre-count of the legislative elections on March 13, Miguel Polo Polo ignited the controversy in the country, not only did he make controversial statements about who can be perceived as Afro-descendants, but also launched it against a radio outlet that did his job: questioning and reporting.
This is W Radio, whose team of journalists interviewed today's influencer who, after counting by the Registrar's Office, was left out of the Congress of the Republic, but which did not come out without first being repudiated by the Foundation for Press Freedom (FLIP), which left him a vehement scolding for publicly questioning the above-mentioned communicators.
Through a vehement thread published on FLIP's official Twitter account, the entity urged Polo Polo, who is akin to Uribism, not to stigmatize the press. “As elected representative to the House you must respect journalists. Its trills go against international and national standards of press freedom, discredit the work of the media, and promote a hostile environment for journalists,” warned the organization that ensures that Colombian journalists can carry out their work.
And it was not the only objection that FLIP made to the political activist, who recently entered the pavilion of burned politicians. The institution recalled the harsh criticism it made to journalist Paola Herrera of the aforementioned station, as well as the other members of that radio station, and therefore urged it to receive criticism in a more assertive way.
They also asked Polo Polo to commit “publicly to respect freedom of the press, combat misinformation and promote an optimal climate for journalism, signing this declaration to which other congressmen have already signed,” the Colombian entity concluded, attaching a list of rules with which the elected politicians are committed to respecting the press.
However, as the popular adage says, FLIP's recommendations to Miguel Polo Polo went into one ear and came out of him through another, as he not only reacted with vehemence, insults and low qualifications to the recommendation, but also called for ignoring the work of the national entity.
And, as expected, he received the support of several of his political mentors, such as Senator-elect María Fernanda Cabal and Paloma Valencia, who also distorted FLIP's pronouncement and defended Polo Polo with cloak and sword.
“If Polo were left, they don't touch him. The shameless FLIP activist is now attacking a young black activist, of humble origin, just because she doesn't let herself be abused by the media. Ready to defend ourselves against progress!” , Cabal said.
For its part, Valencia also criticized the station in question and left this criticism to both FLIP and the media: “Do me a favor! Using legal action against media lies will never be harassment; harassment lies against Miguel Polo. The superiority of power of the W against a boy from Tolú, a candidate, is evident,” said Congresswoman Uribista.
