Authorities in Medellín are still investigating the murder of Juan Danilo Bedoya Román, a 30-year-old from the LGBTI community, found dead in his home and showing clear signs of violence and torture. According to El Espectador, the investigation is focusing on finding the two men with whom Bedoya arrived at his home at 1:00 in the morning, on March 15.
The newspaper Q'Hubo Medellín learned that, the now deceased, arrived at his home around 1:00 in the morning in the company of two men with whom he was dealing. Two hours later, the young man's mother observed the two subjects - unknown to her - hurriedly leaving the house and fleeing in an unknown direction in a vehicle.
After the analysis of security cameras by the authorities, the Bogotá newspaper indicated that the search for the two main suspects is progressing in the city, since they were able to find the license plates of the vehicle in which they fled.
The victim's mother was curious about the situation and, according to the local newspaper, she decided to go to her son's room where she found him dead and with obvious signs of torture.
Authorities reported that the man's body was found by his mother, who immediately alerted the authorities. According to the judicial inspection, the victim was found lying on the floor, tied hand and foot with an extension cord, half-naked and covered with a sheet.
After alerting the authorities, the newspaper Q'Hubo learned that the case remained a homicide to be established, and it will be the Legal Medicine ruling that will finally establish how the 30-year-old man was killed.
The event has caused great commotion in the country and, especially, among the LGBTI community, who point out that it is not possible for more cases like this to occur in the country. For example, organizations that defend the rights of the LGBTI community, such as Caribe Affirmativo, noted that “for our organization it is a great concern that these types of cases are occurring in Medellin because they report systematic violence against people with sexual orientations and gender identities and expressions. various”.
Bedoya's murder took place in his home, located in Las Estancias neighborhood, Villa Hermosa (commune 8), early Tuesday, March 15. According to the Secretary of Security, Bedoya's body had traumas to different parts of the face and extremities.
Noticias Caracol added that the 30-year-old had some personal belongings stolen; however, the motives for the crime are still the subject of investigation.
According to the Office of the Ombudsman, in the period from 2020 to 2021, at least 98 people from the LGBTI community were killed in the country, of which 77 were homicides and the rest were femicides. The main victims are transgender women (27), followed by gay men (14) and lesbians (8), while the regions with the highest number of cases are Magdalena and Atlántico (6), Valle del Cauca (4) and Cesar and Sucre (4).
It should be remembered that Juan Danilo Bedoya Román's crime is not the first to be recorded in Medellín in recent months. Last Tuesday, February 15, Blu radio learned that a 38-year-old Colombian-Venezuelan citizen, identified as Sahmir Javier González Sarmiento, was found dead in the neighborhood La Castellana tied by his hands and feet.
The victim's romantic partner, who decided to keep his identity reserved, told the Bogotá radio station that, after not knowing anything about González Sarmiento for more than 12 hours, decided to go look for him at his apartment, where he found him dead, tied his hands and feet, and with a sheet tied around his neck.
