LONDON (AP) — Roger Federer offers economic aid to Ukraine amid the Russian invasion.
The Swiss tennis player wrote on social media on Friday that his foundation will make a donation of $500,000 “to establish access to education for Ukrainian children.”
Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24 and has been carrying out attacks on schools, hospitals and buildings where people seek refuge in several Ukrainian cities.
“My family and I are horrified to see photographs of Ukraine and torn apart by innocent people who have been terribly affected,” Federer wrote. “We are for peace.”
He and his wife are parents of two sets of twins.
With 20 Grand Slam tournament titles, the 40-year-old tennis player is tied with Novak Djokovic with the second-highest amount in the men's branch, behind only 21 of Spaniard Rafael Nadal.
Another number one tennis player in the world, Andy Murray, announced on March 8 that he will donate “the money I get in prizes the rest of the year” to humanitarian work aimed at helping children in Ukraine.
