The Las Vegas Raiders made an aggressive bet to remain competitive in the Western Division of the American Conference, acquiring receiver Davante Adams, star of the Green Bay Packers.
One person aware of the operation said on Thursday that the Raiders will give the Packers their first pick in the April draft, the 22nd overall, as well as additional compensation.
In return, they will get Adams, who will be reunited with quarterback Derek Carr, his colleague.
The source who reported on the exchange requested anonymity because the agreement had not yet been announced.
The NFL Network reported that Adams had reached a new five-campaign deal for $141.25 million, the juiciest contract ever awarded to a receiver.
This is an ambitious move by the new direction of the Raiders headed by coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler. It is the most recent among teams looking to arm themselves to challenge Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the West of the American.
The Denver Broncos have already won quarterback Russel Wilson and the Chargers defensive end Khalil Mack in a trade.
Now the Raiders are trying to keep going well, having scored 10 victories in the campaign to reach the playoffs for the second time in the last 19 seasons.
Las Vegas could have one of the most dynamic offenses in the league. Carr will have elements capable of controlling the team's game such as Adams, the slot receiver Hunter Renfrow, named the best in his position, the tight end star Darren Waller and the running back Josh Jacovs.
Carr and Adams have a joint record of effectiveness as they were fellow two campaigns at California State University in Fresno. In their final year together in 2013, Adams had 131 receptions for 1,719 yards and 24 scores.
According to some media, Adams recently bought a house in Las Vegas. Carr tweeted “Welcome home” after the operation became known.
Now the Raiders' next big move could be to extend the contract of Carr, who is in the last of five campaigns of his agreement for $125 million. Carr could get a lucrative expansion now that the Raiders seem to be going all out.
Adams has been one of the most productive receivers in the NFL in recent years. His 432 receptions, 5,310 passing yards and 47 touchdowns have been leading the NFL statistics for just over four seasons.
He scored 123 receptions for 1,553 yards and 11 scores last season, when he was included for the second consecutive time on the team with the best players in his position.
