In a statement released by the AFP on Thursday, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that the United States had donated more than 500 million Covid vaccines to other countries.
“The United States has shared about 500 million doses of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines free of charge in more than 110 countries and economies around the world with the sole purpose of saving lives,” Blinken said.
The goal is to more than double this figure to 1.1 billion doses, as there is still a pandemic around the world.
The US chief of diplomacy said he has donated $200 billion in health, humanitarian, and economic aid to more than 120 countries since the coronavirus outbreak two years ago.
Blinken cited examples of US-sponsored immunization programs in Paraguay, Zambia, Malawi, and Thailand.
“We have also invested and supported the expansion of regional production of COVID-19 vaccines in Africa and Asia,” the politician said.
“This work is very important because the pandemic is not over. While countries are fighting against omicrons, many lives are at risk around the world, and we are faced with the possibility of a new variant.” He added.
