MOSCOW (AP) — According to official news agency TASS, the Moscow court announced the extension of WNBA star Brittany Greener's arrest until May 19.
Griner was held at Moscow airport in February after Russian authorities announced they had found electronic cigarette cartridges in their luggage. It was later decided that the cartridge contained oil derived from cannabis, a crime that could also be punished with a 10-year prison sentence.
According to Tass, the court stated that “the court accepted the investigating party's request and extended the term of detention for US citizen Griner until May 19.”
The US Embassy in Moscow did not immediately respond to the question of the Associated Press's opinion.
At the age of 31, Griner is one of the most important players in women's basketball. He won two Olympic gold medals in the United States, the WNBA Hall in Phoenix Mercury and a national championship with Baylor University. She was voted into the WNBA All-Star Games seven times.
