Morocco coach Vahid Halilhodzic called on Thursday as part of the group that will face the Democratic Republic of Congo to qualify for the 2022 World Cup to FC Barcelona's left wing Abdessamad Ezzalzouli, following the rejection of a first call in January.
Ezzalzouli (20), nicknamed Ez Abde, was already summoned for the first time to Morocco's final list for the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), held in Cameroon last January, but rejected the call, according to the Moroccan press, because of his intention to play with Spain, where he recently obtained nationality.
“Before the CAN there was a great controversy. I have spoken to the player twice, his version is different from what was released,” said the French-Bosnian coach during a press conference in Rabat.
“He has many qualities and we don't have a player like him in the Moroccan team, who can change the course of things,” the coach argued.
The brother and agent of the far left, author of a remarkable start to the season with the Blaugrana team, had denied “the rumors” about the decision to play for the Red, stating that he wanted to “play for his country”.
The roster of 26 Atlas Lions players, who will play the Democratic Republic of Congo on March 25 and 29, continues to be without Chelsea midfielder Hakim Ziyech, nor Ajax defender Noussair Mazraoui, in conflict with the coach.
Both players “were on a longer list, but they have made their choice, I respect it and there is no more,” Halilhodzic commented.
